Acrylic materials have many advantages such as light weight and good weather resistance. Various acrylic products can be seen everywhere in our lives. Today, Jinbao shares the reasons and solutions for the cracking of acrylic products.

Why does acrylic crack?

1. Acrylic will not crack due to natural reasons. Generally, it will crack due to aging and external impact.

2. Under normal circumstances, cracking is due to insufficient methyl methacrylate components, causing thermal expansion and contraction. When it is hot in summer, the acrylic countertop will melt like chocolate, or in winter, it will be arched and cold, and the countertop will shrink and crack directly under the action of external force.

3. If the temperature is too high, the main component of acrylic is resin (polyoxyethylene or acrylic). , this composition will change at high temperature and will crack.

4. Acrylic will have some cracks after being carved, and these cracks can be polished after filling.

How to repair and maintain acrylic after cracking?

1. If it is a small crack, it can be disappeared by heating the cracked part with a heat gun or a hair dryer, but this can only cure the symptoms and not the root cause.

2. If it is accidentally cracked or cracked as a whole, it can be bonded with chloroform or dichloromethane, and the strength after bonding is sufficient. You can also purchase professional acrylic glue from material suppliers for repairs.

3. Anti-cracking, acrylic is easy to crack, and attention should be paid to surface protection when handling. If the acrylic product is not damaged, you can use IPS adhesive/adhesive methylene chloride glue or quick-drying agent.

4. Avoid high temperature. Acrylic will be deformed when heated to about 70 degrees, and will soften when heated to above 100 degrees. It should be avoided for places above 100 degrees.

5. Reduce scratches, acrylic polishing. If it is a small scratch, you can wipe it directly with toilet paper or a rag dipped in a little toothpaste. If it is a large scratch, it is recommended to sand the acrylic with sandpaper. If sanded, the product will be scrapped and the entire surface will be scratched.

6. Avoid using chemical cleaners. Acrylic should be scrubbed with a soft cloth. Never use any cleaners that contain particulate matter, and do not scrub with various chemical baths.
